The main aim of the role of expedition nurse is usually
to assist in the adequate preparation of expedition members in respect
of appropriate advice and information on health issues before departure
and to help maintain the health and welfare of the expedition members
whilst overseas. Further information on this can be found on the
Nursing Abroad website.
Experience and Qualifications
Nursing on an expedition necessitates a sound knowledge
of First Aid, and expedition organisations often look for experience
in Accident and Emergency. Tropical disease experience or completion
of relevant course may also be useful. Contracts are usually for
short periods only, varying from a couple of weeks to several months.
As an expedition nurse you may well have to pay your
own way. The Expedition Advisory Centre
produces a useful publication called 'Fund Raising and Budgeting'
which provides a guide to fundraising and a list of useful references
and addresses of grant - giving organisations.
