Courses in Tropical Medicine

A course in Tropical Medicine is often valuable for those wishing to work overseas. This may also be a requirement for nursing in developing countries. Two centres in England run courses in this speciality.

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

The Diploma in Tropical Nursing is run twice a year between March - July and September - February. The course is 1 day per week and lasts for 19 weeks. It is available to Registered Nurses only. The course covers emergency midwifery, dentistry, water and sanitation technology and mental health in the developing world, together with wide coverage of clinical tropical medicine and primary health care. Practical skills and laboratory work is also included in the course.

Contact Peter Wilson (Lecturer / Course Organiser) or the Registry at the London school of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine for further information:

Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine

The Diploma in International Community Health Care (DICHC) is a 12 weeks programme which aims to support and accredit the professional development of community health workers (Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, Nutritionists, Pharmacists, Clinical Officers, Physiotherapists) intending to practise in the tropics. It is also useful for community health workers already practising in developing countries. The DICHC will provide a wide range of transferable and specific skills relevant to community health work and health care management/policy, a basic understanding of research techniques and data analysis. The content of the modules is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of common diseases in the Tropics, health seeking behaviours and multicultural communications which all affect the utilization or otherwise of health care services.

Courses in Expedition Medicine

Expedition Medicine Ltd provide a variety of courses aimed at enabling medics to develope the essential skills which will allow them to feel confident practicing medicine alone and in hostile environments. We provide three courses run both in this country and abroad and developed for medics at different stages of their training. Our 2 day course was developed in conjunction with Raleigh International and was aimed at House Officers and nurses whom need to develope the practical skills essential for expedition medicine. The 4 day course which is more comprehensive, assumes a certain level of ability and experience and is aimed at doctors and nurses with A&E experience.

In addition to our UK courses we also run a very exciting course in the Arctic, aimed at preparing medics for working as a expedition medic in cold hostile environments and at altitude.
