Community - based Health Education and Health Promotion
10 week course for managers/project/field staff -

Education, Eye Health, Schools Health Promotion
Why has the course been set up?
Health Education and Health Promotion are essential
components of most programmes directed at improving the health of
communities in both urban and rural settings. This course has been
set up in response to the need expressed for an intensive short
course to update managers, project and field staff on new developments
in health education and health promotion which can then be applied
to issues relevant to their workplace.
What are the objectives of the course?
The course will:
* Provide skills in research, planning, management
and evaluation of health education and health promotion.
* Allow participants to update their understandings
of a specific area of health through a programme of supervised self-directed
study.
* Provide opportunities to apply these skills to a
problem from the participants own work-setting.
Who is the course for?
Experienced managers and staff within field projects
who are requiring a short course to improve their capacity to plan,
implement and manage the health promotion components of projects.
Applicants should have field experience/training in a subject area
relevant to health promotion and a good working knowledge of English
at Band 6 on the British Council test.
What will the course contain?
The course consists of a core section on community-based
health education and health promotion with a series of pathways/options
that allow students to follow special interests.
The core will take participants through the problem-solving
approach to planning health promotion interventions. Within this
problem-solving approach the following areas of content will be
covered: health promotion and community participation; research
methods and needs assessment; participatory learning methods; the
development and use of learning materials/audio-visual aids and
media; design and implementation of training; planning and management;
monitoring and evaluation
Opportunities to specialise in particular topics are
possible through a series of pathways based on a combination of
taught sessions and self-directed study which include updates on
the topic area, case studies of programmes, review of training materials,
field visits and specialist support/supervision. Not all pathways
would run in a particular year. It is likely that a maximm of 4-5
pathways would be offered in any one year subject to demand. Pathways
will include:
Organization of health education/promotion services/resource
centre;
School health promotion
Health promotion within hospitals and primary health care services
Health promotion within the workplace

promotion
